Justice for Walt Anderson is a web site with an interesting story to tell.
It seems that Walt Anderson was held without trial for more than two years while the Internal Revenue Service tried to put a case together to charge him with tax evasion. The IRS used this effective kidnapping as pressure to force Walt into pleading guilty of tax evasion.
Who Is Walt Anderson?
Walt Anderson is a telecommunications pioneer who used his self-made wealth to fund many early private space ventures. Among his other contributions to space exploration. Anderson invested $30M in MirCorp, the entrepreneurial start-up that privatized Russia’s Mir space station. Before his imprisonment, Anderson was the Chairman and CEO of Orbital Recovery Corporation, the Chairman of the Board for Satellite Media Services, Vice-Chairman of MirCorp B.V, and a member of the Board of Directors for both LunaCorp and Constellation Services, Inc.
The Issues
The issues revolve around a charitable trust which Mr. Anderson created to fund space exploration. Mr. Anderson endowed the fund, the Smaller World Foundation, with ownership of various corporations, such as Space Inc. and Iceberg Transport SA.
The IRS originally claimed that Mr. Anderson personally owed taxes on all gains made by companies owned by the foundation — even though Mr. Anderson was not receiving any income from the charitable trust. Mr. Anderson is specifically excluded from being a beneficiary of the trust by its bylaws.
The IRS has now dropped all charges related to tax years 1995, 1996, and 1997 — after Walt has already wasted more than four years in prison. The IRS is still supporting claims for tax years of 1998 and 1999. However, the admissions which the IRS made in favor of Anderson for the tax years 1995, 1996 and 1997 are equally applicable to tax years 1998 and 1999.
Unfortunately, Mr. Anderson is still in prison because he pleaded guilty before his innocence could be proven. He did this after two years of incarceration by the IRS, in return for promises of better living conditions. I do not believe that I can condemn a man of Walt’s age for doing so after more than two years in confinement. After he pleaded guilty, the government moved Walt from the brutal temporary holding facility in D.C. to a long-term prison facility in New Jersey.
